Program and notes for the Tenth Anniversary Services
Ten years ago this church home was dedicated unto the Lord for the salvation of souls and the strengthening of the faith of the saints. "Forsaking not the assembling of ourselves together". Heb. 10:25. The Lord has truly ben good to us during these days. The lot, building and equipment cost about $110,000. Very shortly after it was dedicated, the "depression" came. Our members were out of work--large payments were coming due--things seemed dark--we laid our problems before the Lord and praise His name, He saw us through to this day. Today, we owe about $23,000 on this property, In about ten years, we have paid off $87,000. If interest were figured, church expenses, and so forth, at a very conserative estimate of $60,000, we will then have raised, with God's help. $147,000 in these ten years. HISTORICAL NOTES ---------------------------------------
The First Scandinavian Baptist Church of Portland was organized January 1, 1884, in the home of deacon D.W. Williams of the First American Baptist Church. Pastor G.Liljeroth was the organizer and first chairman. The first church home was in an old school house on Southwest Caruthers Street near Sixth. Brother Okerson who had gathered funds in the East for the work in Washington and Oregon, allotted funds for the remodeling of the school house. In 1887 the church outgrew this home. The property was sold, and a lot on Northwest Twelfth between Flanders and Glisan Streets was purchased. The building was erected and dedicated August first of the same ear. The church received $500.00 from the American Baptist Home Mission Society; $300.00, from the Baptist City Mission; and the sale of the property made it possible for them to dedicate the second church home with a debt of only $400.00. On September 29, 1984, the church changed its name to the First Swedish
Baptist Church of Portland. |
