officially called the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair. It was during
this time Mayor Henry Lane declared "Portland needs a Festival of
Roses." Roses were growing everywhere around the city; in private and
public gardens, window boxes and in parking strips. The Rose Festival began in
1907. By 1912, the Rose Festival and Parade became a popular annual event.
The float pictured from 1935 Rose Festival Parade was sponsored by the Baptist
Sunday Schools from in and around the city of Portland. The arrow in the
picture on the left points to Miss Betty Hallgren. Mr. David Carlson was
also riding on the float.
The pictures of the Sunday School Float were provided by Mrs. Dave Carlson. The pictures were taken during the Rose Parade on June 7, 1935.
