The following is a personal account of a brief history of Pastor Roy's life.
"I was raised in a suburb of Minneapolis in a
wonderful family consisting of my parents, my three sisters and myself. I
was raised in the Roman Catholic church and came to personal faith in Christ as
a junior in high school through a Bible study taught by the choir director at
our church. I went to Stanford University and majored in Economics, but my
great love in college was our Christian fellowship and the ministry God gave me
on campus. Through my interest in the public policy side of economics.
I spent two summers in Washington, D.C., one working as and intern in the U.S.
Senate and the other working with a ministry to college interns in
D.C. It was during that second summer that I met Susan and we were married
on June 12, 1977. After graduating from Stanford, I spent two years in a
work/study program at Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto, California before
going to seminary at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, I graduated with
a M.Div. degree from GCTS in May of 1981. We moved back to the Twin Cities
where I served for two years on staff with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship at
the U. of M. and local community colleges. During that time, we started
attending Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. A position on the staff
of that church opened up in the fall of 1983 and I became Associate Pastor for
Adult Ministries at Bethlehem. where I served from 1983-1987. While we
were at Bethlehem, the church gave us a liave of absence to serve for a year as
short term missionaries with the GBC Board of World Missions. I taught
Bible and Theology for a year at Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary during
the 1986-87 academic year. When we returned, we stayed at Bethlehem
for a year before moving to Portland in July of 1988 to become senior pastor at
Temple Baptist Church. I served as Temple's senior pastor for seven years,
from 1988-1995. When we left Temple I enrolled in the Ph.D. program at
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, studying systematic teleology.
After completing my coursework and comprehensive exams and beginning to write my
dissertation. a temporary position opened up on the faculty of TEDS. I
taught for three years in the systematic theology department at TEDS while
finishing my dissertation. Following my graduation this past May, I
shifted departments and am currently serving as Assistant Professor of Practical
Theology at TEDS."
