Mr. David Hagg
David Hagg was born in Sweden. He was with
the church congregation in1944. In that year was celebrated the sixtieth
anniversary of the church. Mr. Hagg was the oldest
living member at that time and was baptized in the church on 12th and Caruthers
when the building was new, by Pastor Hayland on August 27,
1887.
Mr. Hagg came to Portland on June 11, 1883, from New Britain,
Connecticut, and attended services at Caruthers Street Church regularly.
Mrs. Hagg, the former Augusta Stenstrom, was baptized on July 3. 1886. Mr. and Mrs. Hagg,
were married in September, 1887. They lived on Vancouver and Page Streets.
To cross the Williamette River to get to the West side of town, they caught a
boat at the foot of Russell Street in Albina. The boat went across to Stark
Street. The fare was five cents. There were no streets from their
house so they had a ten minute walk on a path through the woods to the ferry
boat. He worked in Portland at a
foundry for a number of years as a molder and was permitted to join
the union in the Portland area which was unusual because there was no organized
union in New Britain. Later they bought a 160 acre farm in Reedville,
Oregon and lived there. He worked three years in Portland after buying the
farm in
Reedsville. They had two small children. Mr. Hagg walked to Portland
on Monday morning. He left home at 3:30 AM to be at work at 7:30
AM. He came home once a week with a load of groceries. Brother Hagg served as a trustee,
and in various other capacities, for many years. Lack of transportation
hindered regular attendance.
Mrs. Hagg died on January 6, 1944. Mr. Hagg died
on December 23, 1952.

In this was
manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten
Son into the world, that we might live through him.
